Update 2/20/19: Aston Martin has released another teaser picture of its upcoming 003 hypercar, this time of the back of the car, which can be seen above. Our original article on the car's details, published September 20th, 2018, can be seen below.
Remember when Aston Martin would go for years at a stretch without any significant new cars? Nor do we. Under CEO Andy Palmer, Aston Martin has become nothing if not ambitious. With Red Bull's F1 team, it's working on a wild hypercar, the Valkyrie, but somehow, that's not enough. Aston just announced its plans to launch another hypercar.
Code-named Project 003 (and pictured above in a teaser sketch provided by Aston Martin), this mid-engine car is set to arrive near the end of 2021, not long after production of the Valkyrie and track-only Valkyrie AMR Pro will end. Aston Martin didn't mention Red Bull in the announcement of Project 003, but the two companies have previously confirmed that their collaboration won't end with the Valkyrie. Plus, Aston Martin says Project 003 will take a lot of influence from the Valkyrie.
The car will be built around some sort of lightweight structure—perhaps a carbon-fiber monocoque—and will feature a hybrid drivetrain with a turbocharged internal-combustion engine. Both the suspension and the aerodynamic systems will be active, which Aston says will provide "next-level precision, control and driver connection." The company also promises "class-leading dynamics on both road and track."
Aston's Project 003 should be more practical than the Valkyrie, too, with more space for luggage and the availability of right-hand drive. Production won't be as limited either—while only 175 Valkyries (including 25 AMR Pros) will be built, Aston says it'll build 500 examples of the Project 003.
Andy Palmer, the charismatic CEO of Aston Martin, described Project 003 in a ste
"It was always the intention for the Aston Martin Valkyrie to be a once-in-a lifetime project, however, it was also vital to us that Valkyrie would create a legacy: a direct descendent that would also set new standards within its own area of the hypercar market, creating a bloodline of highly specialized, limited production machines that can exist in parallel with Aston Martin’s series production models. I’m thrilled to announce that this car is the Project '003,' and our next step into a dynamic and exacting arena."
Project 003 will come in addition to Aston Martin's upcoming mid-engine Ferrari 488-fighter. Hearing all this, it's a far cry from where Aston was before Palmer stepped in and jolted the company back to life. We like it that way.
