Launched as a Scion in 2012, Toyota's entry-level 86 sports car is getting a bit long in the tooth. Developed as a joint venture with Subaru, it's gone through several facelifts, but never received the turbocharged engine we hoped it (or its BRZ sibling) would. We first heard Toyota was developing a second-generation version of the 86 back in 2016, but we didn't know whether the company would continue to work with Subaru to develop it. Now, it seems we do.
spoke with Matt Harrison, Toyota's head of marketing in Europe, who confirmed the Supra wouldn't be a replacement for the 86, but join it in the lineup.
“[The] Supra is not to replace that car. They are for different audiences and are different products," Harrison told Autocar. "We see a situation where they will sit alongside each other.”
Though it has a Toyota badge, the 86 is mostly Subaru underneath, using that company's flat-four boxer engine and transmission. Harrison told Autocar it was “a safe assumption” these ties would remain into the next generation of 86. A Subaru spokesperson told us that while the company is working on a new BRZ, it couldn't tell us anything more. We also reached out to a Toyota spokesperson, who told us they couldn't confirm any details about a next-generation 86.
Toyota has a history of relying on partnerships to develop its sports cars, teaming up with Subaru to create the 86, and more recently, joining with BMW to create the new Supra. The Supra is based largely on the BMW Z4, being built on the same assembly line and using the same powertrain. So it would make sense for Toyota to continue this relationship to keep costs down while still having an entry-level sports car to offer buyers who can't afford the Supra. Whether the next-gen car will get the turbo engine we've always wanted has yet to be revealed.
