Last year, Mercedes brought a new entry-level model to the US, the A-Class sedan. It's a nice car, in the spirit of the old 190E, but its 188 horsepower might leave some wanting. That's where AMG steps in. Meet the 2020 Mercedes-AMG A35 Sedan, which unlike the A35 hatch, is US-bound.

This isn't the full-flavor 45-series AMG car—that model will come later with more than 400 four-cylinder horsepower and a fancy new all-wheel drive system. But today's A35 is no slouch, cranking out 302 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque from a 2.0-liter four cylinder, and sending it to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. It's got a variable 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system that, while front-biased, can send up to 50 percent of the engine's torque rearward as needed. All this helps the A35 run from 0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds.

AMG reinforces the A's body with an aluminum plate under the engine and two diagonal braces, adding new aluminum wishbones and new steering knuckles. Adaptive AMG-tuned dampers are optional. The AMG also gets speed-sensitive adaptive-ratio steering with two different weight settings. Bringing things to a halt are 13.8-inch brake discs squeezed by fixed four-piston calipers in front, with 13.0-inch discs and single-piston sliding calipers in the rear.

The new baby AMG gets lots of driving modes, ranging from a full-on Sport+ setting to a Slippery mode for low-grip conditions. There's also AMG Dynamics, which has Basic and Advanced modes that change various stability-control and torque-vectoring parameters.

The A35 looks the part, too, with all the AMG styling upgrades you expect both inside and out. You can even get an aerodynamics package, if the non-adorned car is just too subtle for you.

Mercedes hasn't announced pricing for the A35 sedan yet, but we expect it to cost around the same as its closest rival, the $45,000 Audi S3. We'll see it in the metal at the 2019 New York International Auto Show next month.
