Synergy is one of those words that was probably used a lot when the idea for the 2014 Volkswagen iBeetle was hatched. It's the buzziest of buzzwords, and
fans of brands likely have no more darling children than Apple and Volkswagen. It's a marketing mash-up made in cross-branding heaven, but what is an
iBeetle beyond a name?
Volkswagen says there's deeper integration than usual with an iPhone, some apps and some color and styling tweaks. Some of it sounds un-groundbreaking,
like the ability to stream music from Spotify or iTunes (or switch between them!), and while the iBeetle offers a dock for the iPhone, it's not the only
vehicle to have an Apple-specific connection. Beyond those things, though, which you can mostly get from any phone and a car with Bluetooth audio
streaming, you'll find some toys.
If you know what heel-toe shifting is, you'll appreciate Expert, which turns the iPhone into a G-Meter and displays extra engine readouts adding a
chronometer and a compass. Trainer can be used as an efficiency tool to find and share the quickest route somewhere, and Reader is your window into the
social media world while in your iBeetle; it will even read messages to you. There are other functions like Postcard, Photo and Milestones that are all
about giving people more stuff to share on their social networks, but hey, "the kids are into that thing now."
You'll be able to buy this VW/Apple collaboration as a coupe or convertible, and it will even look more like an iOS device on wheels. There's iBeetle
badging, a Chrome Pack that adds extra shiny objects to the outside, and new colors like Candy White, Oryx White Mother of Pearl Effect, Black Monochrome,
Deep Black Pearl Effect and Reflex Silver. The interior gets "Galvano Grey" accents, "Vienna" leather sport seats with contrasting seam stitching, so the
iBeetle certainly looks spiffy.
If you've been longing for these two companies, both expert at creating beautiful objects that people covet, to get together, now's your time to pick up a
coupe that's been given a dash of Cupertino.
