It's time for everyone to stop freaking out. Teaser photos on , which show the performance division's logo embedded in a Subaru BRZ's front bumper, immediately led everyone with a keyboard and an Internet connection to start screaming, "OMG! Finally, the Subaru BRZ STI is coming!"
Yes, a BRZ emblazoned with STI logos and various modifications is on the way. To Japan. And it won't be the mythical turbocharged monster everyone's wishing for. It's going to be a production version of this Subaru BRZ tS concept, unveiled last weekend at a .
The "tS" stands for "tuned by STI," and it's an STI sub-brand marketed solely in Japan (hence the teasers only being on STI's Japanese-language site). Subaru has offered limited-run tS editions for years on cars like the Legacy, Forester, and even the Exiga station wagon. These incorporate visual, handling, and exhaust upgrades, but they leave the stock powertrains alone. They aren't full-blown STI models like the baby-carriage-winged Impreza we all know and love.
So, if you're holding your breath waiting for a BRZ STI confirmation, inhale now. Or call an ambulance. That announcement is not coming. But that's not to say you won't see a real new STI car before the year's out.
It just won't be a BRZ. Stay tuned.
