Our sources from Japan say that has delayed the introduction of the much-anticipated front-engine/rear-wheel drive sports car, the FT-86, t0 2013. The car was originally slated to go on sale in 2011.
At first, the culprit seemed to be the new plant that Toyota shares with (Fuji Heavy Industries) in Gunma, Japan, however, a Subaru official confirmed that the delay had nothing to do with Subaru's end of the project. We heard that the delay is the result of Toyota designers not being able to decide on the exterior styling of the new car. The car we saw at the Tokyo Motor Show was nothing more than a prototype, and there are reports that the production model of the car will look drastically different.
It seems Toyota is keen on making sure it gets this project right. They may be feeling the pressure after the recall debacle that hit them earlier this year. Stay tuned for more on the development of the FT-86.
