The BMW i3 is a quirky-looking all-electric city hatchback meant for short trips in comfort and style. It wasn't built with fun in mind, but its rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout means it can definitely get sideways if provoked.
gave former WRC driver Rauno Aaltonen an i3 and asked him if he could drive it around a dirt course in anger. As we already know, the the all-electric hatch sends all its torque to the rear wheels at zero rpms, so you can see where this is going.
Aaltonen has no problem drifting the i3 through the dirt, using the car's thin tires and low center of gravity to his advantage. The instant throttle response and fast steering make it easy to fling the hatch sideways, and ride it through a bend.
Watch for yourself as the Finn rips through the dirt and gives us an electric car show we can enjoy.
