The Top Gear test track has long served as a proving ground for the latest performance cars. In the hands of the show's anonymous driver, The Stig, cars get put around the track to see how they compare with one another. Earlier this year, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS set a new lap record, running a 1:13.4, around the track. Its time on top was short-lived, however.

While filming the first episode for season 27 of Top Gear, The Stig managed to set a quickest standing lap time of 1:12.7 around the track in a Ferrari 488 Pista. That's a big improvement over the GT2 RS.

Though the lap is clean, The Stig seems to experience a lot of movement from the rear under braking. He also short-shifts coming out of corners to minimize wheel-spin. Along the back straight, he hits a top speed of 151 mph. As with any other Stig lap video, it's exciting to watch.

It's worth noting Top Gear has yet to lap the Lamborghini Huracan Performante or McLaren 720S—two of the Ferrari's closest rivals—around its track yet, meaning this new record could fall in the not-too-distant future.

This isn't the first time this month we've seen the Ferrari 488 Pista setting lap records. Last week, German publication Sport Auto published a video of a Pista at Hockenheim and setting record around the Grand Prix circuit, beating the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ in the process.
